Membership in the Steel Framing Industry Association improves your individual competitive edge and increases market opportunities through a more competitive environment for cold-formed steel framing.  The strength of over 1,500 members - representing steel mills; coil coaters and processors; stud, connector and equipment manufacturers; panelizers and fabricators; engineers; material suppliers/distributors; and framing contractors— provides a uniquely broad membership that enables us to identify issues and opportunities, along with effective solutions.

With over 1,500 members, SFIA brings together the many sectors of the cold- formed steel framing industry. What can be difficult for one company to achieve on their own is possible when many work together.

Advocacy:

  • One of the largest areas of focus by the SFIA has been to reverse the gains made by the wood industry in the building codes through state and local legislative outreach. Our Executive team is working with many levels of government to ensure steel framing is given sufficient consideration by decision makers.
  • Our Technical Director actively participates in the codes and standards development process, including the International Building Code (IBC), ASTM International (ASTM), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and many others.
  • Starting in 2024, SFIA became an official standards development organization (SDO). We maintain and update the six code-referenced framing standards formerly developed by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), as well as 12 of the accompanying test standards for framing and connectors.
  • Environmental Advocacy: Manufacturer members can participate in SFIA’s industry-wide environmental product declaration (EPD): providing transparency in the environmental impacts of using steel framing. SFIA provides resources and data on how using steel can lower the carbon footprint of construction, and support the circular economy of reuse and recycling.

Architect & Specifier Program

  • As a member, the SFIA Architectural Services team is your resource for reaching architects and specification writers to ensure SFIA certified studs, connectors, contractors and truss fabricators are specified and that our members are given special consideration during the product selection process.
